WILMINGTON, N.C. – Oklahoma wrapped up play at the highly-competitive Williams Cup on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for seventh in a loaded field that featured seven ranked programs.
The 13th-ranked Sooners (T7, +16) shared seventh with top-ranked Utah, while unranked Florida ran away with the team title, finishing at 15-under and 12 shots clear of No. 11 Texas.
Oklahoma turned in rounds of 291-293-296 at the par-72 Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., and placed one golfer inside the top 20. The Sooners' second-round score of 293 (+5) was the third-lowest round of the day, but their bookend scores of 291 (+3) and 296 (+8) kept them from climbing higher on the leaderboard in a field stacked with elite competition.
Sophomore
Clark Van Gaalen (T12, +1) led the Sooners with rounds of 71-73-73 to finish 1-over par and tied for 12th. The 2025 freshman All-American recorded his eighth career top-20 finish in just 14 collegiate events. The Turlock, Calif., product was steady throughout the tournament, leading Oklahoma in par-3 scoring while continuing his strong fall season.
Ryder Cowan (T27, +5) fired rounds of 73-74-74 to tie for 27th and saw his streak of three consecutive top-20 finishes come to an end. The junior led Oklahoma with 11 birdies across the 54-hole tournament.
Freshman Matthew Trotman tied for 37th at 7-over (74-72-77) but delivered a highlight with two eagles on the week, tied for the most in the field.
Jase Summy (T43, +8) closed with a 74 to finish at 224 (+8), while
Asher Whitaker placed 74th at 15-over (73-83-75).
Notre Dame's Nate Stevens claimed the individual title at 7-under after posting rounds of 70-67-72 to win by one shot over Texas' Daniel Bennett.
As a team, the Sooners collected 36 birdies and ranked second in the field with two eagles, both courtesy of Troutman.
Head coach
Ryan Hybl's team will aim to close the fall on a high note next week at the Ka'anapali Classic in Maui, Hawai'i, set for Oct. 27-29. Oklahoma has won the event in three straight seasons at Royal Ka'anapali Golf Club and will look to extend its streak of at least one tournament victory in 16 consecutive semesters – the longest run in program history.
