Sooners Fall in Four to Georgia

NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Georgia, 15-25, 25-15, 27-29, 20-25, Sunday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.  

The Sooners dropped to 12-4 on the season and 4-2 in SEC play, while the Bulldogs improved to 11-5 and 3-3.  

Alexis Shelton led the way offensively with 21 kills, moving her into seventh all-time in OU history with 1,352 career kills. Emoni Bush added 12 kills and was just a dig shy of her second double-double with nine on the day.  

Kelli Jo Burgess had seven kills on 13 swings for a .538 mark, while adding two blocks. Avaya Maga and Harper Hall had 23 and 22 assists, respectively, while Hall added eight digs.  

Georgia took set one 25-15 as the Bulldogs hit .545 in the opening frame. After an early timeout, the Sooners used a 4-0 run to tie the match at 7-all. The teams traded points to a 10-10 tie before a 12-3 UGA run put the set out of reach.  

The Sooners evened things up with a 25-15 win in the second set. OU took an 8-5 lead to force an early timeout by the Bulldogs. Out of the break, the Sooners extended their lead to six to make Georgia use its final timeout of the set at 14-8. Three aces by the Sooners extended the lead to 20-10 and a 3-0 run closed out the set. 

Georgia took a 2-1 lead in the match after a battle in the third set. Tied at 8-8, Georgia used 5-1 run to take the largest lead of the set by either team. The Bulldogs stayed in front, going up 20-16 late in the frame. Back-to-back kills from Tekoa Barnes and Shelton pulled OU within two at 20-18 to force a UGA timeout. The Sooners pulled even at 21-21 and took the lead off a triple block at 23-22. The teams traded four set points before Georgia took the set, 29-27.  

In the fourth set, the Bulldogs were the first to 15 as the Sooners faced a six-point deficit. Down 16-9, OU rallied to make it a three-point match at 21-18. OU ultimately couldn't overcome Georgia hitting .600 in the set, falling 25-20.  

Up next for the Sooners is a tough three-game road swing with two matches against top 10 opponents. OU will face No. 9 Texas A&M on Oct. 17, followed by a matchup with No. 2 Texas on Oct. 19. The trip concludes at Florida on Oct. 22.
