DOYLE SNAPS SERVICE ACE RECORD |
In OU's three-set upset over No. 11 Kansas State, freshman setter Julia Doyle snapped a four-year individual match record when she totaled five service aces. The first Sooner to post four aces in a three-set match was Caitlin Higgins vs. Nebraska on Oct. 25, 2008.
Earlier in the season, Doyle matched the previous three-set record with four service aces against North Dakota State on September 1, 2012. At that moment, it had been nearly three years since another Sooner had accomplished the feat as Suzy Boulavsky recorded four service aces in three sets against Kansas (11/7/09).
The Sooners have maintained a steady blocking game in each of their matches this year, claiming 11 of their 12 wins when they lead their opponents in blocks. On the year, OU has set three new team match records in block assists.
In a three-set sweep versus No. 11 Kansas State, the team totaled 22 block assists; in four sets the Sooners totaled 30 to overcome No. 19 Kentucky, and in a five-set victory over Tulsa the team posted 41 block assists to completely rewrite the Oklahoma record books just five weeks into the 2012 season. |

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma volleyball team (12-4, 1-1) returns to its home court Saturday evening to take on new Big 12 member, West Virginia (8-7, 0-2), at McCasland Field House. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
The Sooners, who were the only Big 12 team to play two Conference matches last week, opened Big 12 play with a 1-1 record. OU managed to pull an upset over then-No. 11 Kansas State (27-25, 25-19, 25-21), and dropped a decision to No. 9 Texas (18-25, 14-25, 10-25) - each in three sets.
Against the Wildcats, the Sooners combined to break three match records.
Freshman setter Julia Doyle became the first player in OU history to stamp five service aces in a single match - despite the set count - while junior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin surpassed her own individual three-set match record when she inked 10 block assists against Kansas State. With McLaurin's efforts, the Sooners also broke a team, three-set match record after they totaled 22 block assists in the sweep over the Wildcats.
West Virginia has yet to pick up a Big 12 win, falling to Texas and TCU in its opening conference matches. Before traveling to Norman for the first time, the Mountaineers will make a stop in Manhattan, Kan., to square-off with the No. 15 Wildcats on Thursday night.
Saturday's match against the Mountaineers will air tape-delayed the same night at 10:30 p.m. CT on FS Oklahoma+ in conjunction with Sooner Sports TV powered by Fox Sports. For a channel listing and complete TV programming schedule, please click here.
Although West Virginia is new to the Big 12, the Sooners and Mountaineers have met once before; 13 years ago to the day, on September 29, 1999 in Evanston, Ill. Oklahoma swept past WVU in three sets to claim the lone win in the series history.
