NORMAN, Okla. – The nation’s second ranked team proved too powerful for a young Oklahoma squad Wednesday evening at McCasland Field House. The Sooners fell in straight sets (-19, -14, -19) to the Longhorns, who captured the outright Big 12 title with the win.

Oklahoma fell to 18-10 on the year and 11-8 in Big 12 play, while UT moved to 23-1 (18-1 Big 12).

“When you play tentative volleyball, you’re never going to win,” said Oklahoma head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We had a few bright moments, but for the most part, we just play hesitant.”

Sophomore Caitlin Higgins and junior Francie Ekwerekwu paced the Sooners with nine kills each. Sophomore Suzy Boulavsky followed with eight, while senior Bridget Laplante and sophomore Brianne Barker added three kills each. Freshman Maria Fernanda led OU defensively with nine digs, while Laplante added eight and Higgins had seven.

Junior Sarah Freudenrich recorded Oklahoma’s only solo block and added a block assist. Higgins and Fernanda were credited with the Sooners’ service aces.

As a team, Oklahoma hit .116 compared to the Longhorns’ .423 clip. The Sooners committed 22 attack errors and three service errors and only managed to post 35 digs on the night. Texas out-blocked OU, 13-3.

Destinee Hooker led Texas with 18 kills, hitting .486, while Rachael Adams added 10 kills, hitting .615.

Oklahoma closes out the 2009 regular season on Saturday, traveling to No. 7 Iowa State.
