Baldy Wins Flight Five
Nov. 3, 2007
SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The Oklahoma women's tennis team continued play Saturday at San Diego State with junior Brittany Baldy claiming the flight five singles bracket, while Christi Baxley and Tara Eckel advanced to the finals of flight two doubles. In singles action, Baldy, who was out last season due to a back injury, defeated Ali Welliver of UC Irvine 6-2, 6-1 to claim her first title of the fall season. "Brittany had a great tournament," OU head coach Mark Johnson said. "She played strong and I am happy with the way she competed. It is good to have her back competing for us." Senior Chelsea Orr, who fell in the first round of play, came back to place herself in the finals of the consolation bracket for flight one. Orr defeated University of San Diego's Monica Wiesener 6-2, 6-3 in the semi-finals. Rachael Cox, who was representing the Sooners in flight four, was defeated in the semi-finals by San Diego State's Olivia Colman in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles action Baxley and Eckel defeated SMC's Alex Poorta and Erin Young 9-8 (6) to earn a spot in the finals, which will be played Sunday. Cox and Elena Antakova, who fell Friday in the first round of flight three, came back to claim the consolation title. The pair defeated Ashley Anderson and Ariel Ohno of the University of Washington. "I am very pleased with our doubles play." Johnson said. "We looked strong in all our matches. Christi (Baxley) and Tara (Eckel) played a tough match and really stayed focused. They both looked very strong." Oklahoma will return to action Sunday to finish play at the San Diego State Invitational and to conclude their 2007 fall season.
