OU women's tennis shines on opening day of tournament.
DALLAS, Texas -- Four University of Oklahoma women’s tennis singles players and one doubles pair advanced to final rounds at the Wildcat Invitational Friday, Oct. 12, in Evanston, Ill.
Sooners Hermon Brhane and Whitney Wofford advanced to the doubles finals after defeating Katie Zordani and Ruth Seaborne of Iowa 9-8, 10-8. Brhane and Wofford will compete against DePaul’s Patricia Fargas and Jasmin Kling Saturday morning.
Brhane later dropped Northwestern’s Linda Abu Mushrevova 6-2, 7-5 and Wisconsin’s Hannah Berner 6-4, 6-3, where she will face her teammate, OU junior Mia Lancaster, in the White Draw finals.
Lancaster bested Iowa’s Katie Zordani 6-3, 6-2 and Northwestern’s Alicia Barnett 7-5, 6-4 to advance.
OU sophomore Abbi Melrose and freshman Zita Engbroks rebounded from a loss as doubles partners and swept their singles matches.
Melrose defeated Minnesota’s Julia Courter 6-3, 6-2 and DePaul’s Caroline Neumann 6-2, 6-2. She will face Northwestern’s Nida Hamilton in the Black Draw finals Sunday.
Engbroks beat Western Michigan’s Kelsey King 6-3, 7-6 (5) and University of Illinois-Chicago’s Kathryn Sharples 6-1, 6-3 to make the Blue Draw finals. She will square off against DePaul’s Kelsey Lawson.
Engbroks and Melrose fell 8-6 to Western Michigan’s Jill Pastunink and Nini Sujashvili. The duo will face Iowa’s Shelby Talcott and Christina Harazin in a consolation doubles semifinal Saturday.
Iowa’s Annette Dohanics outlasted Wofford 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in the Red Draw singles opening round. Wofford will next face Yuliana Umanets in a consolation finals match.
