NORMAN, Okla. – The 46th ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team will open the 2012 Big 12 Championship at the No. 7 seed on Thursday, April 26 against 10-seeded Kansas at 10 a.m., at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
“This is definitely the most important Big 12 championship I have been involved in,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “We are running out of time to create an upset in order to make the NCAA tournament. We will most likely have to pick up at least two wins this week in order for us to be playing in May.”
Oklahoma (10-12, 5-5 Big 12) lost its final regular season matches over the weekend to No. 6 Texas and No. 24 Texas A&M to finish in seventh place in the conference standings.
The winner of the Oklahoma vs. Kansas match will advance to play No. 2 Baylor who received a bye in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.
“Fortunately the team is playing their best tennis of the year,” Mullins said. “We have made tremendous improvement since spring break. We are definitely capable of winning two matches at the championships and the team certainly believes that this is possible.”
OU is led by senior Marie-Pier Huet and sophomore Whitney Ritchie who are ranked No. 36 nationally in doubles and are 16-6 overall at the No. 1 doubles position.
Ritchie holds the team’s best singles record at 16-6 between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Kansas (9-12, 0-9 Big 12) in winless in Big 12 play this season. During the last meeting of the two teams, OU defeated the Jayhawks 5-2 in Lawrence.
Last year, OU advanced to the semifinal round of the conference championship but lost to Texas and missed a chance at the championship match.
