NORMAN, Okla.-- The Oklahoma women's tennis team opens its spring season Saturday, Jan. 19, when the Sooners host Wichita State at the Headington Family Tennis Center at 12 p.m..

OU opens the season 44th in the ITA College Tennis Rankings, giving the Sooners a top 50-preseason rank for the third consecutive season.

The Sooners return six from its 2012 squad and introduce two freshmen and two tranfers.

Headlining OU's returnees is junior Whitney Ritchie. Ritchie earned All-Big 12 honors, was a second team Academic All-Big 12 member, and qualified for the NCAA tournament in doubles.

Junior Hermon Brhane, ranked 99th in the ITA women's singles ratings, transferred to OU after two seasons at Oklahoma Christian. Brhane and Ritchie were ranked 54th as a doubles pair.

OU inspires champions today and prepares leaders for tomorrow by enabling its student-athletes to achieve their highest academic, athletic and personal aspirations. The OU Athletics Department sponsors 21 varsity sports with more than 600 student-athletes and is completely self-supporting.
