WACO, Texas – The 24th-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team defeated No. 38 Cal-Poly, 4-0, in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Championships Saturday in Waco, Texas.

Oklahoma (19-6, 9-2 Big 12) advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the third time in program history with the win over Cal Poly. 

"The team did absolutely everything that was asked of them today," OU Head Coach David Mullins said. "We played a very complete match and we set ourselves up to give ourselves the best chance possible tomorrow."

The Sooners will face the winner of No. 7 Baylor vs. Texas-Arlington on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m., the top-seeded and site host Bears take on UTA at noon Saturday.

OU’s 4-0 shutout over Cal Poly was the program’s first ever shutout in an NCAA tournament match.

The Sooners took the early 1-0 lead after winning their 20th doubles point of the season.

Tara Eckel and Marie-Pier Huet won OU’s first doubles match on the day, defeating CPU’s Florence Lehane and Gabrielle Gatewood at the No. 3 spot, 8-5.

In their first appearance as a pair this season Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Mia Lancaster clinched the doubles point win for the Sooners with an 8-5 win over Cal Poly’s Ashley Pane and Jocelyn Davis at the No. 2 position.

OU won the first three points in singles in straight sets, giving up just two games or less in all six sets.

Two of OU’s three freshmen won the first two singles points for OU, giving the Sooners a 3-0 lead.

Alice Radu claimed the first singles point at the No. 2 position after topping Pane, 6-2, 6-1, while Whitney Ritchie defeated Cal Poly’s Jen Cornea at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Maria Kalashnikova clinched the win for the Sooners, claiming OU’s fourth dual point.

Kalashnikova defeated Amy Markhoff of Cal Polu, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 6 position to end the match.
