NORMAN, Okla.— The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team fell to No. 5 Baylor Saturday afternoon, 5-2.
Oklahoma (8-13, 2-9 Big 12) played Baylor (17-4, 8-0 Big 12) within three points, only the second Big 12 team to do so this season. Sunday’s match marked Oklahoma’s tenth match against a nationally-ranked opponent this season, and first against a team ranked in top 5.
“I’m obviously really happy with today’s performance,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “To win two points against a team like Baylor is quite an achievement.”
The Lady Bears claimed the early lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Oklahoma claimed its only doubles match at the No. 3 position. Sophomore Maria Kalashnikova and freshman Peta Maree Lancaster defeated Karolina Filipiak and Zuzana Chmelarova of Baylor, 8-5.
Sophomore Tara Eckel and Marie-Pier Huet lost at the No. 1 doubles spot to Baylor’s Csilla Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova, ranked No. 8 nationally in doubles, 8-3. The loss ended Eckel and Huet’s five-match winning streak. Sophomore Ana-Maria Constantinescu and freshman Kristina Radan contested Baylor’s Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, ranked No. 64 nationally in doubles, at the No. 2 doubles spot but eventually fell, 8-6.
In singles, the Sooners claimed two singles points at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions. Constantinescu defeated Baylor’s Taylor Ormond, ranked No. 46 nationally in singles, at the No. 1 singles position, 6-1, 6-2. Constantinescu leads the Big 12 at the No. 1 spot with a 10-0 record in conference play and 17-2 record overall. The win was Constantinescu’s third win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season.
Freshman Peta Maree Lancaster claimed Oklahoma’s second singles point at the No. 5 spot, defeating Karolina Filipiak of Baylor, 6-4, 6-4.
The Sooners will host its final regular season match, Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m., against No. 67 Texas Tech. Seniors Brittany Baldy and Kate Robinson will be honored Sunday during a special ceremony for Senior Day, following the conclusion of doubles play.
The first 25 fans in attendance Sunday will receive a free pair of OU pink crocs and a free OU tennis t-shirt. Additionally, children eighth grade and younger are welcome to participate in a five-point tiebreaker match against the members of the Oklahoma women’s tennis team in the “Beat the Sooners Challenge.”
