NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team claimed its first conference win of the season Sunday, defeating Kansas State, 6-1.
Oklahoma (7-10, 1-5 Big 12) improved its home record to 4-1 and snapped a five-match losing streak by beating the Wildcats. Oklahoma has played 12 of its 17 matches on the road, including eight against nationally-ranked opponents.
Oklahoma claimed two of three doubles matches, earning the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. Sophomores Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Maria Kalashnikova defeated Katerina Kudlackova and Nina Sertic of Kansas State at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-2. Sophomore Tara Eckel and freshman Marie-Pier Huet clinched the doubles point for the Sooners at the No. 2 spot, winning a close match against Antea Huljev and Petra Chuda of Kansas State, 8-6. Eckel and Huet hold a 10-3 record in doubles as a pair and have won eight of their last nine matches.
"The girls played really well today," OU head coach David Mullins said. "The outcome on Friday was bad but the performance was good so it's nice to string together two good performances in a weekend."
Huet claimed the first singles point for the Sooners, only dropping two games to beat Kansas State's Petra Chuda, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Brittany Baldy defeated Natasha Vieira of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-3. Baldy holds a 3-1 record in singles this season and is the only upperclassman to see action this spring.
"I'm really happy for Brittany (Baldy)," Mullins said. "I'm happy for her in her senior year to come in and get a win like that."
Constantinescu clinched the match for the Sooners, claiming the third singles point. Constantinescu defeated Antea Huljev of Kansas State, 6-2, 7-6 (2), continuing her success at the No. 1 singles spot. Constantinescu holds a 13-2 record on the season, including two wins against nationally-ranked opponents.
"We still have a lot to work on, especially in our doubles play," Mullins said. "The girls played well today and it was great to come out with a win."
The Sooners play their next three matches on the road, starting next weekend against Iowa State on April 3, and Nebraska on April 5. Oklahoma will return home to Norman on April 18 to play Baylor.
