OU Drops First Home Match to TCU, 4-3

Sooners move to 4-1 at home this season after losing to TCU Sunday, 4-3.

NORMAN, Okla. – The 32-ranked University of Oklahoma women’s tennis lost its first match at home this season to No. 47 TCU Sunday, 4-3, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Oklahoma (5-5) lost the doubles point after dropping matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.   The Sooners are 0-5 after losing the doubles point this season. With the loss, OU is 4-1 in Norman this season.

TCU’s Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova shut out OU’s Abbi Melrose and Whitney Wofford at the No. 3 spot, 8-0, while Kelsey Sundaram and Stefanie Tan defeated Mia Lancaster and Nicole Long at the No. 2 spot, 8-3.

OU’s only win in doubles came at the No. 1 spot.  Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie, ranked No. 30 nationally, topped TCU’s Gabi Barbosa and Olivia Smith, 8-3, to improve to 8-2 this season in doubles.
In singles, TCU quickly won two matches to take a 3-0 lead over the Sooners but OU responded with a win at the No. 2 spot. Huet defeated Simona Parajova of TCU at two-spot, 7-5, 6-2, to cut TCU’s lead to 3-1.

The three remaining singles matches at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 positions all came down to the tiebreaker set.

With a win at the No. 6 spot, OU trailed TCU just 3-2 after Wofford defeated Sundaram, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

TCU clinched the win over OU as Barbosa defeated Long at the five-spot in the tiebreaker set, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, to claim the Horned Frogs’ fourth dual point.

Ritchie won the last match to make the final score 4-3 after defeating Olivia Smith at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 7-6, 7-5.

Next up, the Sooners hit the road to face Rice on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m.
