NORMAN, Okla. – The 41st-ranked University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team defeated No. 28 Tulsa Saturday, Feb. 16, at Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.

Junior Mia Lancaster clinched the upset with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory at the No. 3 position to give Oklahoma a 4-3 victory over the Golden Hurricane.

The Sooners improve to 4-2 after the victory.

“I couldn’t be prouder of what the team did today.” OU head coach David Mullins said. “They just showed a lot of growth in a lot of areas. “

Oklahoma won the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. Hermon Brhane and Whitney Ritchie, No. 36, upset No. 12 Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique, 8-6, at the No. 1 position to remain undefeated this season.

Zita Engbroks and Whitney Wofford clinched the doubles win for the Sooners, after defeating Tulsa’s Michelle Farley and Saana Saarteinen at the No. 2 spot, 8-5.

Ritchie retired at the No. 2 position to give Isaura Enrique a 6-1, 2-0 victory.

Freshman Zita Engbroks gave Oklahoma its first singles point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot.

Tulsa’s Samantha Vickers, ranked-55th, defeated Brhane at the No. 1 position, 7-5, 6-4, to tie the match at two.

“We haven’t found a way to come back from a set down this year but to see Wofford come back, to see Abbi (Melrose) come back and to see Zita staying focused the entire time was great.’ Mullins said. “Win or lose that match today, I’m happy because it shows growth.”

Wofford lost her first set, 7-5, but battled back and went on to give the Sooners a 3-2 lead after her, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, victory over Saana Saarteinen.

At the No. 4 position sophomore Abbi Melrose fought hard but eventually fell, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7) to Tulsa’s Maria Sant’Anna at the No. 4 spot.
