OU Ends Weekend with Win Over Hawaii

NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 44 Oklahoma women’s tennis team won the consolation match of the Miami bracket of the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend after defeating No. 56 Hawaii, 5-2, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Miami, Fla.

Whitney Wofford won OU’s fourth point to clinch the win over Hawaii. The junior defeated Xenia Suworowa at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

The Sooners’ 55th-ranked duo of Whitney Ritchie and Hermon Brhane won in No. 1 doubles, beating Katarina Poljakova and Suworowa of Hawaii, 8-3. Zita Engbrooks and Mia Lancaster gave Oklahoma the doubles point after defeating Kelsey Daquio and Rebecca Faltusz, 8-5.

“Doubles looked better today and we got off to a great start in singles at the No. 1 through No. 4 spots,” OU head coach David Mullins said.

Lancaster won OU’s first singles point at the No. 4 spot, beating Hawaii’s Paulina Petriskova, 6-3, 6-1. Brhane’s, 6-1, 6-1, victory over Martina Kostalova gave the Sooners a 3-0 lead in the match.

After losing the first set, 3-6, Abbi Melrose came back strong in the next two sets to defeat Faltusz, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

“This weekend has helped us understand the things we need to focus on in order to have a successful season,” Mullins added.

Next up, the Sooners face No. 29 Rice on Saturday, Feb. 2 at noon, in Norman.
