NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 44 Oklahoma women’s tennis team lost, 5-2, to No. 35 Arizona State Friday in its opening match of the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Miami, Fla.

OU’s Hermon Brhane and Abbi Melrose captured the Sooners’ singles points. Brhane was leading No. 86 Desirae Krawczyk at the No. 2 spot, 7-6 (5), 3-2, when Krawczyk retired. Melrose topped Hannah James at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

“We got outplayed in singles for long stretches at too many spots,” Mullins added. “A lot of that had to do with Arizona State’s great play but I still believe we could have been more competitive.”

Oklahoma (1-1) played from behind after losing the doubles point to the Sun Devils to give ASU a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

“I was very unhappy with our doubles today,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “It will take several weeks for us to figure out what our lineup needs to be and determine who is going to embrace the challenge.”

Oklahoma will face Hawaii Saturday at 9 a.m. in the consolation match.
