NORMAN, Okla. - The 39th-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team opened its spring season Sunday by defeating Wichita State, 5-2.

“It was definitely a little tougher match than we expected,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “Wichita State is a brand new team. They only had five players on scholarship last year and now they have a full team. They’re tough.”

The Sooners came out strong and won the doubles point against the Shockers with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.

Maria Kalashnikova and Whitney Ritchie dominated at the No. 2 doubles position, defeating Carla Venticinque and Montse Blasco, 8-1.

The pair of senior Ana-Maria Constantinescu and freshman Alice Radu, ranked No. 31 in the country, topped Veronika Blaskova and Delia Damaschin, 8-4.

“We went out and got the doubles point,” Mullins said. “We played amazing at the No. 2, it’s as well as I’ve seen that pair play. We took care of business at No. 1 and have some work to do with No. 3.”

OU collected four points in singles play, beginning with a solid performance by freshman Mia Lancaster. Lancaster defeated Valerie Brockman at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-2.

Despite a shaky second set, Radu took down Raphaela Zotter at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

At the No. 5 position, senior Maria Kalashnikova sealed the Sooners victory by defeating Blasco, 7-5, 6-4.

Constantinescu came back from a first set loss to defeat Lutfiana Budiharto, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The Sooners travel to Stanford, Calif., where they’ll meet UNLV in the first round of the ITA Indoor Kickoff Weekend on January 28.
