NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma senior catcher Jessica Shults has been honored as the 2012 Division I Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and Diamond Sports announced Tuesday.
The Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year award is presented annually to the top catcher from an NFCA member institution in each of the following divisions: NCAA (Divisions I, II and III), NAIA, NJCAA (Divisions I, II and III), Cal JC, NWAACC and high school.
A committee comprised of head coaches in each of the 10 divisions determined the winner of their respective award.
In her junior season, Shults posted a .378 batting average and hit 20 home runs to tie for 10th in the country. She also recorded a .755 slugging percentage, got on base at a .463 clip and drove in 65 runs.
Shults helped the Sooners reach the best-of-three championship round at the 2012 Women's College World Series and to a 54-10 overall record.
In addition to her collegiate success, Shults was a member of the USA Softball National Team this summer. Along with OU teammate Keilani Ricketts, Shults helped the US to a gold medal at the World Cup of Softball and a silver medal at the ISF XIII Women's World Fastpitch Championship.
