NORMAN, Okla. — The Oklahoma Softball coaching staff received the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Central Region Staff of the Year award for the sixth time in program history Thursday. OU Head Coach Patty Gasso, Associate Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi, Assistant Coach Tripp MacKay and Volunteer Assistant Coach Lisa Carey were awarded the honor by the NFCA after the Sooners came within one game of winning the Women’s College World Series.
Thursday’s regional award marks the sixth such honor for Gasso, the fifth for Lombardi and the first for MacKay and Carey.
The 2012 Oklahoma team captured its ninth Big 12 title with a conference record of 19-5 before entering postseason action as the nation’s No. 4 seed. OU defeated Lehigh, Tulsa and Oregon State to sweep its NCAA Regional before taking down Arizona in two games of NCAA Super Regional play.
After defeating South Florida, 5-1, to open WCWS play, OU knocked off top-seeded Cal, 3-0. A 5-3 win over Arizona State gave OU the opportunity to win its second national championship. After defeating Alabama, 4-1, in the first game of a best-of-three game series, the Sooners fell 8-6 and 5-4 to finish the season 54-10.
