American team defeats Australia, 3-0, as OU duo wins gold for second straight summer.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma’s Keilani Ricketts and Jessica Shults claimed gold medals for the second consecutive year Monday at the World Cup of Softball as the USA Softball National Team defeated Australia, 3-0, to claim the event’s title. Ricketts entered the pitching circle for the American team in the sixth inning and finished with three strikeouts while not allowing a hit or walk in two innings of action to seal the American victory.
USA posted two runs in the first inning of action before adding another in the fifth inning.
Ricketts finished the event with three starts and four total appearances while Shults appeared in three games as well, garnering two starts. Ricketts finished the event with 9.2 innings of action in the circle claiming a complete-game win against Canada with six strikeouts and no runs in five innings of action. Ricketts finished the World Cup with 10 strikeouts against two walks and seven hits. At the plate, the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year was 0-3 but did pick up two walks while scoring one run.
Shults finished the event 1-5 at the plate and recorded a bases-loaded walk against Puerto Rico for an RBI in the team’s opening game.
The American team next returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Surrey, British Columbia, Canada for the Canadian Fastpitch International Championshp. USA opens the event against Venezuela in its first of six pool play games.
