NORMAN, Okla. -- Freshman pitcher Taylor Dewbery is one of seven Sooner freshmen this season and all have the distinction of being natives of Oklahoma. Hailing from McAlester, Dewbery earned all-state, all-region and all-district honors in 2011-12 and was her district's pitcher of the year.
She helped lead her team to state runner-up finishes in Class 5A in 2009 and 2010, and also helped the squad reach the state quarterfinals in 2008 and the semifinals in 2011. Dewbery was invited to the 2010 USA Junior Olympic Team tryouts and was named an alternate to the team after the event.
Q: What has your experience been like so far?
TD: “It’s been a great experience so far. I love it; I love doing this every day. It was a hard transition at first, coming from high school. I knew it would be hard, but not that hard. Here everything goes by so quick. Everything here is just so much faster. As a pitcher going against hitters like this is way different. Every hitter that gets up to bat is going to be tough.”
Q: Growing up in Oklahoma, were you a Sooners fan?
TD: “Oh yeah, Sooners all the way.”
Q: At what point did it first enter your mind about playing for Oklahoma?
TD: “When I was 10. I was just like, 'That’s who I'm going to play for.' It’s always been my goal.”
Q: When did it become a realistic possibility to join the Sooners?
TD: “Probably freshman year. I committed my sophomore summer. It was early in the process.”
Q: Did you consider any other schools?
TD: “Yeah there were a couple, but I knew I was coming here.”
Q: As a pitcher, you work every day with seniors Keilani Ricketts and Michelle Gascoigne. What have you learned from them?
TD: “Well Michelle moves the ball really well and I came in here not throwing many different pitches, so that’s learning a lot from her there. I learned a lot from watching Keilani on the mound and just her presence and the way she carries herself. I’m trying to take in everything I can.”
Q: What sort of expectations do you have for yourself this season?
TD: “I just want to take advantage of every opportunity that I have. Any chance I get to be on the mound, I want to take advantage of it.”
