STILLWATER, Okla. – The 12th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls handed the 11th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners its first loss in Stillwater in six meetings Wednesday evening. After four scoreless innings, the Cowgirls (33-7, 5-0 Big 12) broke through following Oklahoma’s only defense miscue of the evening to gain a lead it would never relinquish. The Sooners (29-9, 3-2 Big 12) answered back but it was too little, too late as the Cowgirls prevailed, 3-2.

Megan Castle led off the fifth inning with a single to left field and reached second on a throwing error. With two runners aboard, Chelsea Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice that recorded the first out of the inning. Kelsey Anchors then struck out looking before Mariah Gearhart hit a home run to left center on a 0-2 count to plate the game’s first three runs.

In the top of the sixth, Oklahoma responded with a two-out infield single from Brianna Turang. Amber Flores then turned on the first pitch she saw to deliver her 10th home run off the season off the right-field scoreboard. The blast was the 51st of her career, six shy of the Big 12 career record.

Keilani Ricketts (18-8) threw a complete game allowing three unearned runs on four hits. Ricketts struck out 11 batters, allowed no walks and hit two batters. OSU starter Anna Whiddon also went the distance allowing two earned runs on two hits. Whiddon walked one and hit one batter and struck out eight.

The Cowgirls have now taken two series meetings this season, marking a first for OSU since 1997. The two teams meet for a finale time in 2010 on Wednesday, April 28 in Norman.

Oklahoma returns to action this weekend with a two-game series at Texas A&M. Saturday’s game is set for 2 p.m. CT with Sunday’s finale scheduled for noon CT. Both games can be heard locally on KREF 1400 AM and online at SoonerSports.com.
