  QUICK RECAP

CATHEDRAL CITY - The 12th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team faced its toughest test of the season Friday afternoon at the Cathedral City Classic. The Sooners (10-2) took on top-ranked Washington and saw their comeback bid fall just short against the Huskies (9-1), 7-4.

  THE DIFFERENCE

Freshman Jessica Shults got Oklahoma on the board in the first inning with a single up the middle to score junior Haley Nix. Shults then hit a three-run home run, her sixth of the season, in the sixth to cut the Washington lead to just three runs. Shults ended the game 2-for-3 scoring a run and driving in all four of OU's runs. Shults' hits were two of Oklahoma's seven on the afternoon. The Sooners out-hit the Huskies, 7-5.

  SCORING SUMMARY

Oklahoma came out hot with Nix leading off the game with a double down the right field line. With two outs in the inning, Shults' first hit, a single up the middle, brought home Nix to give OU the early lead. Washington answered in the bottom half of the frame when Jennifer Salling reached on a walk and came around on a home run by Danielle Lawrie. The Huskies added a third run in the bottom of the second on Taylor Smith solo home run to left center. UW tacked on four more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Niki Williams plated Alyson McWherter and Lawrie on a home run to left field. Morgan Stuart then doubled to right field and came around on a Shawna Wright double. Oklahoma threatened in the top of the sixth, tacking on three runs to trim the deficit to just three. Junior Chana'e Jones and senior Amber Flores each singled up the middle when Shults came to the plate with no outs. Shults hammered a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall to cut the margin to 7-4.
