  QUICK RECAP

The 13th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team opened play at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Friday afternoon. Behind a solid relief appearance by sophomore Kirsten Allen, the Sooners (4-1) got late-inning home runs from seniors Amber Flores and Lindsey Vandever and junior Haley Nix to drop Cal State Fullerton, 7-1.

  A GAME-CHANGING PLAY

In additon to her home run, Vandever made a brilliant defensive play in the second inning. Playing up on a sacrifice bunt attempt, Vandever dove to catch the  pop-up attempt and threw to first to catch the runner off the bag for a double play.

  SCORING SUMMARY

Oklahoma put single runs on the board in the first and third innings. Nix scored in the first frame on a wild pitch after reaching on a hit by pitch. In the third, sophomore Karolyne Long came around on a defensive miscue by the Titans. The Sooners added two insurance runs in the fifth on the home runs by Flores and Vandever. All three runs - Long, sophomore Katie Norris and Nix - in the sixth inning came off Nix's first home run of the season.

  GAME NOTES

  • Flores hit her second home run of the season, the 43rd of her career. She is now five shy of tying Samantha Ricketts atop the school's all-time list.
  • Vandever and Nix each hit their first home runs of the season.
  • Allen picked up her first win of the season.
