HOUSTON – The seventh-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team closed out the 2009 Houston Marriott Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Texas State. The Sooners (6-2) put three runs across in the fourth and Texas State (4-4) answered with two in the sixth.

Oklahoma put base runners on in each of the first three innings but was unable to get runs on the board. Sophomore Krystle Huey reached on an error in the first and freshman Katie Norris walked in the second. Sophomore Dani Dobbs singled in the third.

In the fourth, junior Amber Flores reached base on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a single by senior Samantha Ricketts. With one out, junior Lindsey Vandever walked to load the bases before Flores crossed the base with Wendy Trott’s ground out. Sophomore Chana’e Jones then brought home Vandever and Ricketts on a single. Dobbs walked before the inning ended.

The Bobcats went down in order in the first and fourth innings. Texas State put a runner on in the second on a hit by pinch and Alex Newton singled in the third to give the Bobcats their first hit. Both teams went down in order in the fifth.

Texas State plated two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Shekia McKnight walked and advanced to third on a Newton double. With two on and no one out, pitcher Kirsten Allen came in relief of starter Allee Allen for the Sooners. After K. Allen struck out Kristina Tello, Leah Boatright reached on an error, which scored McKnight and Newton. With a runner on base, K. Allen struck out McKenzie Baack and forced Jenna Emery to ground out to end the threat.

Allee Allen (3-0) was credited with both runs scored, although only one was earned. She went five complete innings. Kirsten Allen picked up her first save of the season, pitching two innings. Katie Garnett (2-2) got the loss on the mound for Texas State.

Oklahoma returns to action Wednesday afternoon, hosting Stephen F. Austin in a 2 p.m. doubleheader from the OU Softball Complex.
