HOUSTON – North Carolina State scored two runs in the top of the sixth to down the seventh-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, 2-1, in the opening game of the 2009 Houston Marriott Classic. Starting pitcher D.J. Mathis scored OU’s only run as a pinch runner for designated player Katie Norris.

OU struggled offensively, recording three hits on singles by sophomore Chana’e Jones, Norris and junior Lindsey Vandever. Sophomore Wendy Trott walked twice in the contest. In all, OU stranded eight base runners. Mathis scored in the fourth inning after filling in for Norris following a single. Senior Samantha Ricketts reached first on a fielder’s choice bunt, moving Mathis to second. Vandever’s single moved the runners up another base and Mathis scored on a throwing error by the center fielder.

N.C. State put two runs across in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, a dropped third strike allowed Lauren Peters to reach first on a passed ball. After Alyssa Ishibashi was hit by a pitch, Alyssa Allbritten walked to load the bases. A single by Bridget Desbois to left center brought Peters and Ishibashi home to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead.

Mathis fell to 2-2 on the year in the circle. She went all seven innings, allowing two runs, both earned on two hits. Mathis struck out 10 and walked one.

Lindsay Campana got her first win on the year for the Wolfpack. Mathis’ scored run was not earned and Campana struck out five.

Oklahoma’s 3 p.m. CT contest with Texas State was canceled due to inclement weather. The Sooners return to action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. contest against Indiana.
