NORMAN, Okla. --New coach Matt Potter admitted he’s not the best with names. He also said he’s not been spending his time looking at a lot of game film or memorizing the roster. Looking and learning about last year won’t do much good for anyone.”
Potter wants a clean slate.
“They laugh at me every day because I’m asking,” said the first-year soccer coach. “But our staff has done a good job of drawing our own conclusions.”
Well, the conclusion has to be the Sooners look pretty good after a brief spring season. OU went 2-0-2 with wins over Oral Roberts and Arkansas and ties against SMU and Tulsa. The Sooners gave up just one goal in the four matches.
“Hopefully we can use it as a stepping stone,” Potter said. “We’ve tried to create some habits and foundations of how we would like to do things. The players have responded well to that. And now you want to pick up where we left off in the spring.”
The Sooners finished last season 7-13, but they have 10 starters back for the 2012 campaign.
“We’re hoping for a successful season,” Potter said. “How that plays out, depends on how the players come in, how they have taken care of their summer and how they respond to the training come August.”
Potter coached Washington State last season into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He was 88-69-26 in his nine seasons with the Cougars.
And while he’s just getting used to Oklahoma – having spent only about three months here – he’s also trying to find out how his team will be in 2012.
“I’m just happy to be here,” Potter said. “Really across the board, I’m pleased with the effort. Change can be difficult, but they have been positive about how they have gone about their business. Overall, I’m looking forward to what’s around the corner.”
