Aug. 9, 2012 | Congrats to U.S. Women's National Team on Gold Medal
The U.S. women's soccer team won the Olympic gold medal Thursday in London, avenging one of its most painful defeats with a 2-1 victory over Japan.
Carli Lloyd scored in the eighth and 54th minutes for the Americans, who lost to the Japanese in penalty kicks at last year's World Cup final.
The U.S. team has won three consecutive Olympic titles and four of five since women's soccer was introduced at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
The match drew 80,203 fans to Wembley Stadium, breaking the record for a women's soccer game at the Olympics.
"Congrats Team USA," said OU Head Coach Matt Potter. "Whether I was watching the earlier games with my 11-year-old daughter or the final today with the team, the US National Team showed the way on what it means to be a team and how to leave it all out there (on the field). The truely have the hearts of champions and we should all be inspired. Congrats again to all involved, they are champions, role models and a great example of all that this great game has to offer."

Nov. 7, 2011 | Video: Nelson's Final Thoughts on 2011
Oklahoma Head Coach Nicole Nelson offered her thoughts following the loss to No. 2 Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals on Nov. 2. The postseason appearance marked the second straight year that OU advanced to the Big 12 Championship, a first since the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Two of OU's seven conference tourney appearances have come under Nelson, who just completed her fourth season.
The OSU game was the final for seniors Michelle Alexander, Sage Coralli, Lisa Jett, Kelsey Kraft, Tori Rocke and Jordan White. Video: Sooners' Final Postseason Preparations
The Sooner soccer team arrived in San Antonio on Tuesday evening around 6 p.m. and held a light practice at Blossom Soccer Stadium that featured a spirited game of handball followed by a round of penalty kicks to prepare for the possible postseason scenario.

Sept. 6, 2011 |
Offense Revived
The Sooners entered the 2011 season with skeptics wondering how the offense would replace the program's all-time leading scorer in Whitney Palmer. In the offseason, head coach Nicole Nelson expressed her excitement for the number of different attackers the team would feature, including the dynamic duo of juniors Dria Hampton and Caitlin Mooney.
In the season opener against Alabama at Birmingham, the offense did not disappoint, with five different goal scorers, including Hampton and Mooney. Seniors Michelle Alexander and Kelsey Kraft, and sophomore Zoe Dickson also scored in the contest. The Sooners received their sixth different goal scorer of the young season in the next game against Tennessee in senior Sage Coralli, but the game resulted in a 3-1 loss and the start of a three-game losing streak.
During the skid, OU was shutout by then-No. 6 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, 1-0, and then back home against SMU two days later, 1-0. After leading the Big 12 in goals scored after the opening weekend, the Sooners' offense seemed to disappear.
However, the offense was revived this past weekend at home with seven goals and a pair of wins. On Friday against Oral Roberts, Mooney contributed on all four goals during the 4-1 victory and tied two program records with two assists and six points. Only two other Sooners in program history, Palmer and Logan Womack, have tallied six points in a game. Palmer and Womack rank No. 1 and No. 2 all-time in OU history with 83 and 75 points, respectively. Alexander and Hampton also scored in the contest.
On Sunday, the offense continued its recent surge with a 3-1 victory over visiting Missouri State. Alexander tied Mooney for the team lead with three goals and sophomore Amy Petrikin and freshman Hannah Gordon each recorded their first career goals.
With seven goals over the weekend, OU is climbing back up the Big 12 standings after the three-game losing streak. The 13 goals scored in 2011 have come from eight different Sooners with Alexander and Hampton leading the way with three and Hampton with two.
In addition to spike in goals scored during the two-game winning streak, the offense has displayed its ability to apply pressure for a full 90 minutes. In the last two games, OU has outshot the competition, 44-16, including a 22-13 advantage in shots on goal. In addition, OU had a season-high 11 corner kicks on Friday, and 18 total in the last two games, in comparison to the opponents' six.
Coach Nelson said the team turned a corner after Friday night's win, and it appears it couldn't have come at a better time as the Sooners face their first full weekend of road games at the Sun Devil Desert Classic. On Friday, OU battles Arizona State at 6:30 p.m. CT in Tempe. On Sunday, OU concludes the tournament in Tempe against Arizona at 1 p.m. CT.

The Sooners' two wins in the Bedlam Series came in 2005 (Stillwater) and 2001 (Norman) and they played in a scoreless tie in Stillwater in 2003 and lost in penalty kicks in the 2010 Big 12 Championship.

June 21, 2011 | Transfers Bolster 2011 Roster
The University of Oklahoma soccer team added a pair of transfers for the 2011 season. The first is junior midfielder Alison Farrell, who attended classes last season in Norman but sat out due to transfer rules after she left Oklahoma State University. Most recently, senior goalkeeper Tori Rocke (pronounced "rock") joined the Sooner family after spending the last four years in graduating from Northern Arizona University. Rocke received her degree in criminal justice and will pursue her master's degree in human relations at OU.
Farrell is an Edmond, Okla., native and was a three-time all-conference honoree at Edmond North H.S. She
also played club soccer with fellow OU teammate Dria Hampton at Edmond S.C. Farrell has two years of eligibility remaining after playing 24 games with 12 starts in 2009. She missed the 2008 season due to a knee injury. The 2009 Academic All-Big 12 second team member scored her first career goal against the Sooners on Oct. 23, 2009.
Rocke, a native of Garden Grove, Calif., enters 2011 as her final year of eligibility after starting the last three years in the Northern Arizona goal. Rocke redshirted her first season and left NAU as the all-time leader in shutouts (21) and winning percentage (.637, 30-16-5 record). She is a two-time All-Big Sky Conference honoree
and a four-time All-Academic conference selection. In 2010, she was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) third team Scholar All-American.
Farrell and Rocke are part of a six-member class of newcomers this upcoming season. In February, the coaching staff signed Emily Bowman, Hannah Gordon, Abby Hodgen and Kelly Price.

April 13, 2011 | Free Clinic a Success
The University of Oklahoma soccer team recently opened its doors to the public for an annual free clinic at John Crain Field in Norman, Okla.
On April 5, the Sooner players and coaches welcomed 350 participants from the community and held various games and drills in two separate sessions.
Registration for the event was filled within 24 hours of the event being publicized as priority registration is given to Sooner Kid's Club members, past participants of OU summer camps and local youth soccer associations.
"The clinic
was a huge success for us this year," said OU Head Coach Nicole Nelson. "It's always amazing to see the support and interest for soccer in the city of Norman and across the state. We unfortunately had to turn away almost 300 other interested participants.
"It's an day that our players and coaches really enjoy and we look forward to hosting it again next year."
