Rowing Earns Top Finishes in Austin

The Sooners claimed a gold, two silvers and a bronze.

Oct. 31, 2009

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Oklahoma rowing team took to the water Saturday at the Head of the Colorado on Lady Bird Lake. The Sooners took home the gold in varsity open four, silver in both varsity open four and novice eight and the bronze in varsity open eights.

Oklahoma entered three boats in the varsity (open) eights. Texas finished first and second, and the Sooners “A” boat rounded out the top three with a third-place finish. The varsity “A” boat was led by coxswain Kelsey Witten, Rebecca Staff (stroke), Chelsea Moore (7), Meagan Harrell (6), Brooke Sheppard (5), Abbey LaFollette (4), Meghan Farrell (3), Melea McCreary (2) and Ashley LaFollette (bow).

The varsity open four yielded a first and second place finish for Oklahoma. The “B” boat claimed top honors placing first. The “A” boat placed second and SMU finished third. Coxswain Lauren Price, Meghan Farrell (stroke), Melea McCreary (3), Abbey LaFollette (2) and Ashley LaFollette (bow) rounded out the first place “B” boat and boat “A” consisted of coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Rebecca Staff (stroke), Chelsea Moore (3), Meagan Harrell (2) and Brooke Sheppard (bow).

The freshman novice eight “A” boat finished in a close second behind Texas. The novice were led by coxswain Carly Schueler, Elizabeth Blanche (stroke), Heather House (7), Nicole Bladow (6), Courtney Gilberg (5), Chloe Troutt (4), Morgan Whinery (3), Paige Gero (2) and Kelsey O’Grady (bow).

"As we move through the fall season, the varsity squad is beginning to gain a stronger appreciation for the level of commitment required to be competitive,” head coach Leeanne Crain said.”The novices had a good day, finishing less than a second behind Texas. We've got some good height and overall athleticism in the freshman class. They are just learning the sport, but there is a lot of raw talent in the group."

Oklahoma’s next regatta is the Head of the Hooch in Tennessee, Nov. 7.
