NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma rowing team's novice squad will compete at the Head of the Colorado on Saturday in Austin, Texas.

OU's first-year rowers will race four boats in two events on Lady Bird Lake, with two entries in the Women's Novice 8+ and two crews in the Women's Second Novice 8+.

Beginning its fifth season as a varsity sport, the Sooners will race at the Head of the Colorado for the fifth straight season. The regatta, commonly referred to as the "PumpkinHead Regatta," is one of three events OU has competed at in every season.

Many of Oklahoma's 43 novices had never rowed before joining the Sooners at the beginning of the season. While two novice boats raced at the Head of the Oklahoma on Sept. 29, the rest of the OU rowers will be seeing their first racing action as collegiate rowers.

"We have a strong group of the athletes that have been working hard over the last eight weeks to be competitive here at the Head of the Colorado," novice coach Emma Gresson said. "We are looking forward to testing our speed and I'm excited to see what we can get accomplished on race day."

In the women's novice eight event, two OU crews will race against 11 other boats, including four from conference-rival Texas. Oklahoma will also race two boats in the women's second novice eight against two Texas crews in a four-boat field.

Oklahoma's fall season, a precursor to the championship spring season, closes at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Nov. 3-4.

The spring season opens with the Sooners hosting the OU Invitational on March 9-10 on the Oklahoma River. OU will have three more races before competing in the Big 12 and Conference USA championships.

Live results from Austin will be available on AustinRowing.com. For results and behind-the-scenes updates on the Sooners, follow @SoonerRowing on Twitter.
