NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women’s rowing team begins the 2010 campaign this weekend at the OU Invitational. Racing begins at 4 p.m. Friday, March 12 and concludes on Sunday, March 14 at 10 a.m.  The regatta will feature dual racing between teams from Kansas, Tulsa, SMU, Creighton and San Diego and will take place on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City.

This season Oklahoma looks to its veteran leadership in Chelsea Moore and Meagan Harrell, who competed in the varsity four last season.  Moore and Harrell race in the first varsity eight this weekend.  Filling out the first varsity eight are teammates Kelsey Witten, Sarah Kelle, Murray State transfer Nikki Furmanek, UCF transfer Melea McCreary, and standout freshmen Rebecca Staff, Meghan Farrell, and Rebecca Winchester. OU also fields a second varsity eight, varsity four, first novice eight and second novice eight. The novice eight features five members of the 2009 recruiting class including Ashley and Abbey La Follette, Heather House, Sara Sherrer and Carly Schueler.

“The early season is always interesting because anything can happen,” said Head Coach Leeanne Crain.  “Most teams have been spending the winter months on the ergs so time on the water has been limited.  We are as prepared to race as anyone out there, but will certainly take the results in stride – the wins and the losses.  The goal is to be fast in May when it really matters, so our focus at this point is to gain valuable experience that can only be acquired on the race course and build upon that as we go through the season. We know it’s a long road between March and May and the plan is to keep gaining momentum as we go.”
