NORMAN, Okla. -- After winning a silver medal on Saturday, the Oklahoma rowing team won a bronze medal Sunday at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn.

In their final regatta of the fall season, the Sooners raced four boats in the open pair event in a 44-boat field Sunday. OU was led by Rebecca Staff and Nikki Furmanek, who won a bronze medal. The pairs were made up of members of Saturday's varsity eight that won a silver medal.

"All the pairs did a nice job today," said head coach Leeanne Crain. "The course was pretty congested, so it was challenging for them to maneuver, but I think they had a good time out there."

In the Women's Open Pair, Staff and Furmanek finished in 20:19.8 for a third-place finish. Sooners Ashley LaFollette and Kellie O'Reilly finished 11th in 20:52.7, just .2 seconds ahead of teammates Emmie Preskitt and Laura Combs in 12th. Marilyn Kozlowski and Kristin Clift were right behind in 13th with a time of 21:02.6.

Kozlowski and Clift were issued a 10 second penalty for hitting a buoy. Without the penalty, the three OU boats would have finished within .3 seconds of each other on the 3.1 mile course. Oklahoma joined by 40 other crews in the open pair race.

In addition to Sunday's open pair race, the Sooners competed in three events Saturday, where five of OU's six boats finished in the top ten against as many as 48 crews in each race. Oklahoma's first day was highlighted by a second-place finish in the championship eight, and a fourth-place finish in the championship four.

The Head of the Hooch marks the end of the fall season. The Sooners' championship spring season opens when Oklahoma hosts the OU Invitational on March 9-10 on the Oklahoma River. For the fourth-straight season, OU welcomes some of the top crews to the Oklahoma River.
