NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma rowing team won a silver medal and raced to five top-10 finishes Saturday on the first day of the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Joined by over 1,600 crews on the Tennessee, River, the Sooners competed in three events on the regatta's first day. OU's races were highlighted by a second-place finish by the varsity eight in the championship eight, and a fourth-place finish in the championship four. Oklahoma raced two boats in the championship eight, championship four and novice eight events against as many as 48 crews in each race.

"I'm very proud of this team and the progress we've made this fall," said head coach Leeanne Crain. "The first varsity eight really stepped up today and the fours raced really well. Unfortunately, the novice eight was charged with a 30 second penalty which dropped them three spots to seventh. The important thing now is for us to turn our attention to the winter training to focus on preparing for the spring season. The months ahead will determine how we'll stack up against some very strong Big 12 and Conference USA opponents at the end of the season."

In the Women's Championship Eight event, the Sooners' varsity eight won a silver medal with a second-place finish in 16:25.6. OU's second varsity eight finished 16th among 30 crews with a time of 17:15.4. The race was won by Duke in 16:03.5, and Miami, Texas and Tennessee also finished in the top five behind Oklahoma.

In the Women's Championship Four race, Oklahoma's two boats finished fourth and 10th, with times of 18:21.9 and 18:52.1, respectively. In fourth, OU finished just 3.7 seconds behind Texas and less than 10 seconds behind second-place Miami on the 3.1 mile course. Duke had the race's fastest time of 17:46.1 and finished over 25 seconds ahead of Miami.

In the Women's Collegiate & Club Novice Eight race, Oklahoma's first-year rowers finished in seventh and eighth. OU's first novice eight boat finished in 18:11.8, which would put them in fourth place, but a 30 second penalty for interference dropped the Sooners' time to 18:41.8 and a seventh-place finish. They finished just ahead of OU's second novice eight boat, which came in eighth with a time of 18:44.6.

The Head of the Hooch continues Sunday with one race for the Sooners on the Tennessee River. OU will race four boats in the open pair events. For complete results from the regatta's final day, and continued updates and behind-the-scenes news, follow the Sooners on Twitter at @SoonerRowing.
