NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma rowing team's novice squad finished first at the Head of the Colorado Saturday on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas.

The Sooners raced four boats in two events, defeating Texas in the women's novice eight race with a first and fourth-place finish and finishing second and third in the second novice eight race.

In the women's novice eight event, Oklahoma's first novice crew finished first in 15:45.3, nearly 10 seconds ahead of Texas. The Longhorns claimed second and third place, before OU's second boat finished fourth in 17:17.7. Texas' third boat came in fifth in the 11-team field.

In the women's second novice eight, OU raced two boats against one Texas boat. The Sooners came in second and third, with times of 17:37.6 and 18:22.2, respectively.

For many of Oklahoma's 38 novices that raced Saturday, it was their first race as collegiate rowers. While two novice boats raced at the Head of the Oklahoma on Sept. 29, the rest of the OU rowers saw their first racing action in Austin. Many of the Sooners had never rowed before joining the team at the beginning of the season.

The Sooners close the 2012 fall season at the Head of the Hooch Nov. 3, in Chattanooga, Tenn. For continued updates and behind-the-scenes news, follow the Sooners on Twitter at @SoonerRowing.
