OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma rowing team opened its 2012-13 season Saturday with four top-five and six top-10 finishes at the Head of the Oklahoma.

On a rainy day on the Oklahoma River, the Sooners began their fifth season with a day packed with races. OU raced in five events, and eight rowers competed four times.

The Sooners started the day with a third, seventh and 12th-place finish in the women's collegiate 8, followed by two top-ten finishes in the collegiate four and a fifth and eighth-place finish in the novice eight. The regatta's first day was capped by 500 meter Night Sprints, where OU raced six boats in two events to cap a festival-type day.

"I was pleased with how we started our season," head coach Leanne Crain said. "It was great to row in front of our home fans in Oklahoma City at such a great event. Congratulations to Clemson and Stanford, two great crews who had some impressive performances today."

The varsity eight race was the first of the day for the Sooners, who finished third, seventh and 12th. The first varsity eight finished third in 14:59.570, behind Clemson and Stanford and ahead of Texas and Tulsa. Oklahoma's second boat finished in seventh in 15:36.629, followed by OU's third boat in 12th with a time of 15:43.394

In the women's collegiate four event, Oklahoma raced four boats, finishing two in the top four. Following winner Stanford and runner-up Clemson, OU finished third in 16:27.873 and fourth in 16:43.726. Big 12 rival Texas rounded out the top five, finishing fifth. The Sooners' final two boats finished in 15th and 20th, with times of 17:29.816 and 17:51.981, respectively.

The final event of the afternoon racing for the Sooners was the women's collegiate novice eight. OU's first-year rowers finished in fifth and eighth, with times of 18:32.916 and 21:04.177. After many just learned to row three weeks ago, OU's top boat finished behind two crews from both Kansas State and Tulsa.

The Sooners return to the Oklahoma River Sunday for two races to close out the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta. OU will race four boats in both the open pair and open four events.
