NORMAN, Okla. -- The third-ranked University of Oklahoma women’s golf team widened its lead Monday at the Alamo Invitational after firing a second-round 284 (-4) at the par-72 Briggs Ranch Golf Course in San Antonio, Texas. The Sooners sit on top of the 15-team field with an overall score of 563 (-13), eight strokes clear of second-place Texas A&M.
The Sooners’ 13-under 36-hole score breaks the program record by 11 strokes. The previous two-round of 574 was set at the 2011 UNLV Spring Invitational. All five OU golfers are in the top 20 out of 78 competitors.
“We had another solid round today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We made a few birdies late in the round. It was great watching everyone play well and having fun out there.”
Leading the charge for the Sooners on Monday was junior Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who improved upon her first-round score by five strokes. The defending NCAA champion shot a 2-under 70 on the day to jump19 spots to a tie for 20th place. Jao-Javanil registered a team-high five birdies on the day, helping her overcome a double-bogey on the par-4 fourth hole.
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay and senior Taylor Schmidt each fired a second-round 71 (-1). Tanguay, who began the day in a tie for 25th place, recorded a total of four birdies and moved up 10 spots into a tie for 15th place. Schmidt improved her standing by one spot and is now tied for second place with a 36-hole total of 139 (-5) after shooting a career-low 68 Sunday. She trails leader Sarah Beth Davis of Texas A&M by two strokes.
Junior Emily Collins recorded three birdies and three bogeys en route to an even-par 72 in the second round, putting her in a tie for 10th place with a 2-under-par two-round total of 142.
Junior Kaitlyn Rohrback also ended the day in a tie for seventh place after firing a second-round 73 (+1).Rohrback scored a triple-bogey on the par-4 second hole but played the other 17 holes at 2 under par.
The Sooners, looking for their second straight tournament win, will tee off in Tuesday’s final round of the Alamo Invitational at 8:30 a.m. CT. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com.
