NORMAN, Okla. -- The third-ranked University of Oklahoma women's golf team broke the single-round school record by shooting a 9-under-par 279 in the first round of the Alamo Invitational Sunday in San Antonio, Texas. The Sooners lead the 15-team tournament by seven strokes over second-place SMU and are eight strokes ahead of third-place Tulane with two rounds remaining at the par-72 Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
OU's Sunday performance broke the previous 18-hole program record by one stroke, which was set just 11 days ago in the Sooners' most recent round (Susie Maxwell Berning Classic).
"We played solid today," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "It was fun watching the girls make some putts. With 36 holes left, we have to stick to our game plan."
The first round was highlighted by senior Taylor Schmidt and junior Kaitlyn Rohrback, who each shot a 4-under 68. Schmidt's bogey-free round was a career best and featured four birdies. Rohrback carded a team-high six birdies and totaled only two bogeys. The pair is tied for third place, one shot behind co-leaders Hayley Davis of Baylor and Jennifer Park of SMU.
Junior Emily Collins started the round with bogeys on the first two holes before rebounding to card five birdies over the next six holes. She totaled only one bogey on the back nine and finished with a 70 (-2), good for a tie for seventh place.
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay fired a 73 (+1) in the first round, putting her in a tie for 25th place out of 78 competitors.
Junior Chirapat Jao-Javanil finished the first round in a tie for 39th place after firing a 75 (+3).
The Sooners tee off in Monday morning's second round beginning at 9:50 CT. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com.
