NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team fired a first-round 299 (+11) Friday to finish the day in a tie for 10th place at the 18-team Liz Murphey Fall Preview at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
The Sooners are ahead of four top-30 teams in a talented field that boasts 12 squads ranked in the top 30, including three in the top 10.
“We came back and played the back ninesolid as a team,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We just need to get off to a better start the next two days. For the girls competing, par is a great score out here.”
With 36 holes remaining, OU trails leader Auburn by 12 strokes, but is only five shots behind second-place UCLA.
The Sooners were led Friday by junior Emily Collins, who shot an even-par 72. Collins carded only one bogey on the day (third hole) which was combatted by her birdie on hole 18. She stands in a tie for 11th place out of 90 competitors.
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a 3-over 75 and ended the round in a tie for 32nd place.
Senior Taylor Schmidt and junior Kaitlyn Rohrback each fired a 76 (+4), ending the day in a tie for 42nd place.
Junior Chirapat Jao-Javanil, the defending national champion who is coming off a top-10 finish at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, ended the round in a tie for 54th place after shooting a 77 (+5).
With only three strokes separating the Sooners from the top five, Drouin-Luttrell said she is confident her team can make a run for a strong finish.
The Sooners tee off the second round on Saturday at 7 a.m. CT. Live stats are available on Golfstat.com.
