NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 13 University of Oklahoma women's golf team is tied for first place with No. 19 Pepperdine after firing a 2-under-par 286 in Monday's first round of the season-opening Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo. The Sooners and Waves lead third-place UC Davis by six strokes.
OU, which recorded a total of 21 birdies on the day, was led by juniors Chirapat Jao-Javanil, Anne-Catherine Tanguay and Emily Collins. Each ended the round under par and stands in the top five among 90 competitors.
"For our first time out this semester, I think we played pretty solid," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We made some putts early and kept our round going. The course always plays tough out here and everyone handled it very well today. We have a lot of golf left but we need to still play smart golf in the next two rounds."
Jao-Javanil, the reigning NCAA champion, leads the tournament after carding a career-best-tying 68 (-4). She recorded six birdies on the day, all of them over the final 12 holes.
One stroke behind Jao-Javanil is Tanguay, who shot a 69 (-3). She carded five birdies and only twobogeys and is in a three-way tie for second place.
Collins started the round strong and was 5 under par through 13 holes. She gave back four strokes with a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey over the next four holes, but rebounded for a birdie on No. 18 and stands in a tie for fifth place with a 2-under 70.
Senior Taylor Schmidt and junior Jade Staggs are both tied for 61st place after carding a 79 (+7).
Competing as an individual and in her first action as a Sooner, Kaitlyn Rohrback registered four birdies and finished with an even 72. The Tennessee transfer stands in a tie for 12th place.
The 18-team field will play the second round Tuesday and the final round Wednesday. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
