NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's golf team shot a 305 (+17) in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional Thursday at the par-72 Colorado National Golf Course in Erie, Colo., finishing the day tied for 18th place out of 24 teams with 36 holes remaining.
OU, which is eight strokes behind a trio of teams tied for seventh place, needs a top-eight finish in order to advance to the NCAA Championships.
"We have some work to do in these next two rounds," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We are in a position right now where we still can make up some ground."
Sophomore Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil shot a team-best 72 (E) to finish the first day tied for 12th place out of 126 competitors. Jao-Javanil, who recorded four birdies on the day (including on holes 17 and 18), is five shots behind leader Sydney Burlison of Stanford and just one shot out of fourth place.
Sophomores Anne-Catherine Tanguay and Emily Collins each fired a 4-over 76 and stand in a tie for 54th place. Tanguay stood at 4 over par through the first six holes before playing even the rest of the round. Similarly, Collins was 6 over through the first 12 holes before rebounding to play the final six holes at 2 under.
Junior Taylor Schmidt and Jacki Marshall are tied for 109th place after each carded an 81 (+9). Marshall played the front nine at 1 over and the back nine at 8 over.
No. 38 Stanford leads the field after its 1-under round of 287. The Cardinal leads seventh-ranked North Carolina by one stroke and top-ranked UCLA by three shots.
The Sooners will tee off on Friday at 12:50 p.m. C.T. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com and NCAA.com.
