COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Oklahoma women's golf team is four strokes out of first after firing a 298 (+10) in the first round of the Big 12 Championship Friday at the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The Sooners finished the day tied for fifth place.
"We got off to a shaky start this morning but were able to turn around," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. "We played really solid on the back nine once we got going. We have 36 holes left and I believe the girls are ready for tomorrow's round."
Oklahoma's 18-hole total tied the program record for lowest score in the first round of a Big 12 Championship. The last time the Sooners shot as low in the first round was in 2000, when OU claimed its first Big 12 title.
Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil shot a team-best 71 (-1) to end the round tied for first with five others. The freshman was one of two golfers to sink four birdies on the day.
Joining Jao-Javanil in the top 20 are OU senior Ellen Mueller and freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay. Mueller is tied for ninth place after recording a one-over 73 and Tanguay is tied for 18th after shooting a 75 (+3).
Junior Brooke Collins and freshman Emily Collins each carded a 79 (+7) to finish the round tied for 49th place.
The Big 12 Championship got off to a late start after a morning thunderstorm delayed start times by three hours.
With 36 holes remaining, the Championship's team standings remain close. Ten squads trail leader Texas Tech by eight or fewer strokes.
As a result of Friday's rain, Saturday's round is being pushed back one hour. The Sooners will be in the first set of teams to tee off, playing with golfers from Texas A&M and Missouri. Groups will start on the first hole at 9 a.m. CT
