NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team shot a first-round 285 (+5) Friday and leads the 15-team SunTrust Gator Invitational at the par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
The third-ranked Sooners hold a one-shot lead over defending national champion and fourth-ranked Alabama and are four shots clear of third-place and seventh-ranked Florida with two rounds remaining. The SunTrust Gator Invitational features seven teams ranked in Golfweek’s top 45, including three squads ranked in the top 10.
“We played solid today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We started the round really well and we made mistakes in the middle, but we are adjusting our game plan for tomorrow. I am proud of the way we hung in there today and how we made some big putts down the stretch.”
The junior duo of Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Anne-Catherine Tanguay each recorded a 1-under 69 in the first round for OU. They stand in a four-way tie for third place, just one stroke behind co-leaders Stephanie Meadow of Alabama and Portland Rosen of Virginia.
Junior Emily Collins is in a tie for 15th place after firing a 72 (+2), while senior Taylor Schmidt is in 32nd place after recording a 75 (+5). Junior Jade Staggs sits in a tie for 57th place after carding an 8-over 78 in the first round.
The second round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. CT, and the tournament will conclude on Sunday. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com.
