NORMAN, Okla. -- The third-ranked University of Oklahoma women’s golf team will travel to Florida this weekend to participate in the SunTrust Gator Invitational Friday through Sunday (March 15-17) hosted by the University of Florida at the 6,074-yard, par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville.
Oklahoma will look to build on its success from its last event, a first-place finish last week at the Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz.
“This is a great tournament for us,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “There are a lot of good teams here and it will give us a good gauge at the midpoint of the spring season.”
The 15-team field features seven teams in Golfweek's top-45, including three other squads ranked inside the top 10. The field includes No. 4 Alabama, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 7 Florida, No. 16 Virginia, No. 20 Baylor, No. 24 Oklahoma State, No. 42 Florida State, FIU, Kent State, Miami, Mississippi State, San Diego State, USF and UT-Chattanooga.
Playing in OU’s No. 1 spot will be junior Chirapat-Jao Javanil, who leads the Sooners into the event with 22 top-25 career finishes, including four top-10 showings this season. The defending NCAA individual champion is coming off a second-place finish at the Clover Cup.
Emily Collins will play in the Sooners’ No. 2 position after finishing in a tie for third place last week. Collins has finished in the top-20 five times in OU’s six events this season.
Senior Taylor Schmidt will participate in the No. 3 slot after a placing in a tie for fifth place at the Clover Cup. It was her seventh career top-10 finish.
Jade Staggs is competing in her fifth event of the year and will play out of the No. 4 position. The junior carded a personal best 18-hole score of 68 (-4) in the Clover Cup first round and also registered her third career top-20 finish.
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay rounds out OU’s lineup. Tanguay is coming off of a tie for 15th place last week and has yet to place outside of the top 20 in any of OU’s six tournaments this season.
The Sooners will tee off Friday beginning at 8 a.m. CT and will be paired with Alabama and Florida. Tee times will be assigned for Saturday’s second round, and Sunday’s final round will commence with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. CT.
