NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma's women's golf team shot a two-round 570 (-6) Saturday at the 16-team Clover Cup in Mesa. Ariz., and is in first place with 18 holes remaining.
After Friday's first round was postponed due to inclement weather, the Sooners fired rounds of 281 (-7) and 289 (+1) during Saturday's first day of play at the par-72 Longbow Golf Club. The Sooners are the only team to finish under par and hold a 13-shot lead over second-place SMU (+7).
"We played solid today and made a lot of birdies," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We've been focusing on certain parts of our games the last few weeks and its was great to see the hard work pay off."
OU junior Jade Staggs led the way for the Sooners on Saturday, carding a team-low and new personal-best 4-under 68 in the morning round (seven birdies), followed by an even-par 72 in the second round.Staggs is in third place out of 94 competitors with a 36-hole total of 140 (-4). She is two shots behind leader Jenny Haglund of SMU.
Standing one shot behind Staggs is junior Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who is in fourth place with a 36-hole total of 141 (-3). Jao-Javanil carded six birdies in the first round en route to a 1-under 71, and followed with five more birdies in her 2-under-par (70) second round.
Senior Taylor Schmidt and junior Emily Collins each shot a two-round 142 (-2) to finish the day tied for fifth place. They both recorded eight birdies on the day. Collins is playing as an individual for the Sooners.
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a 147 (+3) and stands in a tie for 14th place heading into the final round.
Fellow junior Kaitlyn Rohrback is tied for 27th place after carding a two-round 150 (+6).
The Sooners will tee off in Sunday's final round of the Clover Cup at 9 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
