NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma women’s golf team fired a second-round 284 (-4) Saturday at the 12-team Florida State Match-Up Invitational to take over first place at the par-72 Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla., with one round remaining.
The Sooners, who were in sixth place to start the day after shooting a first-round 298 (+10) Friday, have a nine-shot lead over second-place Florida State with a 36-hole total of 582 (+6). The Seminoles’ shot a 5-over 293 Saturday for the tournament’s second best score of the day.
The Florida State Match-Up Invitational features a unique format where each team is paired with another school. The outcome will be determined by taking the best four scores from the paired teams. The Sooners are paired with the GeorgiaLady Bulldogs, who carded a 300 (+12) in the second round and are tied for third place. The two teams have the lowest combined score among the paired teams with a 36-hole total of 730.
“We played really well considering how tough the conditions were,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “I’m proud of the way we fought coming down the stretches.”
Oklahoma was led by junior Jade Staggs, who carded a personal-collegiate-best 70 (-2). Staggs entered the day in a tie for 16th place but climbed up the leaderboard into a tie for sixth place with a 36-hole total of 144 (E). Her day included three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole. She is four strokes out of the lead.
Standing only one shot behind Staggs are teammates Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Anne-Catherine Tanguay. The juniors each fired a second-round 71 (-1) and are in a tie for eighth place at 145 (+1). Jao-Javanil recorded a team-high six birdies in the second round.
Junior Emily Collins, who was tied for 25th place after her first round, climbed into a tie for 16th place with a second-round 72.
Senior Taylor Schmidt shot a 74 (+2) and stands in 19th place with a 150 total.
The Sooners will tee off in Sunday’s final round at 8 CT. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
