NORMAN, Okla. -- The 24th-ranked Oklahoma’s women’s golf team fired a 292 (+4) in Sunday’s final round of the 18-team Liz Murphey Fall Preview to finish in a tie for sixth place at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The Sooners improved their team score each round to end with a 54-hole total of 888 (+24) to finish in a tie with fifth-ranked Duke.
The Sooners finished ahead of six top-30 teams in its toughest tournament of the season to date. The Liz Murphey featured 12 top-30 teams, including three ranked in the top 10. OU finished 12 strokes behind champion North Carolina and was only five strokes out of the top three.
Oklahoma was led on the final day by Chirapat Jao-Javanil, after she struggled in the first two rounds. The defending NCAA champion shot a 5-over 77 on Friday and Saturday, but rebounded to shoot even par on Sunday. The junior recorded two birdies and two bogeys and finished the tournament in a tie for 40th place with a 226 (+10).
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay and senior Taylor Schmidt each carded a third-round 73 (+1) in the final round. Tanguay's round included four birdies and brought her 54-hole total to 220 (+4), good for a tie for 20th place. Schmidt began the day in a tie for 59th place and jumped 19 spots to finish in a tie for 40th place with Jao-Javanil.
Junior Emily Collins was OU’s top finisher on the weekend, tying for 16th place. Collins fired a final-round 74 (+2) with the help of four birdies and totaled 219 strokes (+3) over 54 holes. It marked her sixth top-20 career finish.
Junior Kaitlyn Rohrback carded a 76 (+4) in the final round to finish in a tie for 45th place with a three-round total of 227 (+11).
Oklahoma will be back in action Oct. 15-17 when it hosts the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman.
