NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished in second place at the 15-team SunTrust Gator Invitational after recording and 6-over-par 286 in Sunday's final round in Gainesville, Fla. It marked OU's sixth top-three finish in its seven events this season, and the Sooners' Chirapat Jao-Javanil bested the 78-player field to claim the individual crown.
The No. 3 Sooners posted a three-round 868 (+28) and finished just three strokes behind reigning national champion andfourth-ranked Alabama. The SunTrust Gator Invitational featured seven teams ranked in the Golfweek top 45, including four teams ranked in the top 10.
"I'm proud of the way we played this week; we hung right in there until the end," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "This was a great field for us and we know what we need to work on before our next event. Ja played really well this week and was the only player in the tournament under par."
Jao-Javanil shot a career-low 206 (-4) on the weekend to win the tournament by five shots over Virginia's Portland Rosen. The junior fired a 1-under 69 in the final round at the 6,002-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course to earn her fifth career individual title.
Fellow junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay claimed her eighth career top-10 finish after recording a 1-over 71 in the third round. She ended the tournament with a three-round 216 (+6) and finished in eighth place.
Junior Jade Staggs improved upon her second-round score by seven strokes to climb the leaderboard into a tie for 35th place. She carded an even-par 70 in the final round, bringing her 54-hole total to 225 (+15).
Junior Emily Collins carded a third-round 76 (+6) to bring her three-round total to 226 (+16). She finished in a tie for 38th place.
Senior Taylor Schmidt also improved upon her second-round score by seven shots. She carded a 4-over 74 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 56th place.
The Sooners will be back in action for their final tournament of the regular season April 5-7 at the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational.
