Oklahoma had a 21-13 overall record in 2011-12 and ended its season with a 74-70 loss to St. John's (N.Y.) in the second round of the NCAA Championship. It was OU's 13th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, a record for a Big 12 Conference team. OU was 11-7 in Big 12 play and finished second to 2012 national champions Baylor. Reverse center Jelena Cerina (3.9 points, 3.6 rebounds) was the lone graduate. ABOUT OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN
Oklahoma Christian has had only two women's basketball coaches in the program's history, Max Dobson and Stephanie Findley. Dobson recruited Sherri (Buben) Coale to OC and she played for him for two seasons, then played for Findley for two seasons. Jan Ross also is an OC alumna, graduating in 1986, one year before Coale in 1987.
Stephanie Findley has recorded more wins than any women's college basketball coach in Oklahoma history, entering this season with 521. Last season OC was beset by injuries (six players missed all or large chunks of the season) and finished 9-20.
Coale was a starting guard on OC's best team ever, in 1985-86. OC advanced to the NAIA quarterfinals, beating Wisconsin-Green Bay along the way in the national tournament. In the NAIA District 9 title game played at Cameron University in Lawton, OC set a still-standing NAIA record by shooting 79.6 percent from the field (39 of 49). Needless to say, OC won 92-68 over Cameron that night.
OC left its longtime homes in the NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference after the 2011-12 academic year. OC now is a member of the Heartland Conference (which has members in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Arkansas) and is in the first year of the NCAA Division II membership process. OC hopes to be a full Division II member by the 2015-16 academic year.
Katy O'Steen is OC's only returning All-Sooner Athletic Conference player, having received honorable mention the past two seasons.
