NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team finished third in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll released Wednesday, edging fellow Final Four participant and conference rival Baylor by two points.

The Sooners ended the regular season ranked 12th, but capped a resilient postseason run with a second straight national semifinals appearance.

It was OU's fifth consecutive year to be ranked in the final poll and best finish since 2002 when the Sooners were No. 2 after losing to Connecticut in the national title game. OU was No. 4 in last year's final coaches' poll.

No. 1 Connecticut won its second consecutive and seventh overall national championship Tuesday night. Stanford, who fought the rally attempt by the Sooners in the Final Four, stayed at No. 2.

Xavier, Duke, Nebraska, Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida State (tied for ninth) completed the top 10 and seven Big 12 Conference teams finished ranked in the poll.

The Sooners ended the season with the nation's toughest strength of schedule, having, at some point, played all four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Championship and 13 teams ranked in the final top 25.
