NORMAN, Okla. -- Every Sooner veteran had the same reaction after the team's Oct. 26 intrasquad scrimmage -- their energy level needed to be better.
Oklahoma fueled the fans early and often in its exhibition opener Thursday, racing to a 118-53 victory against Oklahoma Christian behind double-digit scoring total from five players.
"I think we came out and proved that we can play with energy," OU point guard Morgan Hook said. "We talked about our scrimmage and how we came out flatlined, and I think we came out with that as a chip on our shoulder. Tonight we came out with energy and I think we did a good job."
Junior center Nicole Griffin scored a game-high 23 points and Hook totaled 18 points and nine assists with her only turnover coming on a charge called under the basket.
Oklahoma Christian put points on the board first with a 3 from Katy O'Steen, who finished with a team-high 12 points, then saw a 3 1/2-minute scoring drought as the Sooners connected on their next five shots for a 12-point run.
OU upped the score to 30-8 halfway through the first period and led 51-23 at halftime.
"They gave us some great stuff to work from in the film room -- a lot of cuts on offense, which tested our jump to the ball," OU head coach Sherri Coale said, "Played a lot of five out where our big had to come out and guard on the perimeter, which was good for us."
Considered the team's most improved player, Griffin showed an enhanced ability to run the floor in transition and establish position in early offense, leading to several quick scores for Oklahoma.
"I worked on post position and getting the ball where I can score," Griffin said of her offseason. "I've worked on a couple of moves and my hands and working on trying to catch the ball and looking to pass at the same time."
Griffin, who lead the Sooners in field goal percentage last year, was nearly flawless shooting with an 8-for-9 field goal performance and 7-for-8 free throw shooting.
OU newcomers also provided an ample supply of firepower.
Junior college All-America transfer Portia Durrett scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds and freshman Nicole Kornet had 14 and eight. Backup point guard Maddie Manning totaled nine points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Coale announced after the game that junior forward Lyndsey Cloman was ending her basketball career due to chronic back problems. Cloman missed the 2011-12 season after tearing an ACL in OU's first exhibition game.
"She's 21 years old -- she's got a bad back and we would like for her to live a healthy life," Coale said. "It was a very tough decision for Lyndsey but probably the right one. I think everybody agrees with that."
