STILLWATER, Okla. – The eighth-ranked Oklahoma (5-1) wrestling squad dropped its first dual of the season at the hands of No. 2 Oklahoma State (3-0), 22-12, at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

“I was really disappointed in our effort and performance tonight,” head coach Jack Spate’s said.

The Bedlam showdown got underway at 184 pounds in a rematch between OU’s Erich Schmidtke and OSU’s Chris Perry. Schmidtke upset the Cowboy’s then-No. 5 ranked Perry, 13-2, at the Oklahoma City Open on Nov. 7. The second meeting did not fare as well for the Sooner as Schmidtke fell behind 3-0 before earning his first points on an escape in the third period. That was all Schmidtke could manage as Perry took the bout by a 6-1 decision.

The Sooners fell behind, 7-0, after OU’s Keldrick Hall gave up a 14-3 major decision to Oklahoma State’s fifth-ranked Chris Perry at 197 pounds.

Oklahoma senior Nathan Fernandez looked to get OU on track in the heavyweight bout going against OSU’s Blake Rosholt. Fernandez had a 3-2 lead in the third period, but Rosholt scored a reversal with just 25 seconds remaining to pull off the upset, 4-3, over the Sooners eighth-ranked wrestler.

The Sooners trailed 10-0 heading into the 125-pound bout between OU’s fifth-ranked Jarrod Patterson and OSU’s No. 7 Jon Morrison. Patterson, the reigning Big 12 Champion, took the early lead after posting an escape in the first period. Morrison was awarded a point after Patterson was penalized for locking hands, evening the score at 1-1. Patterson rode out Morrison in the third period to give him a riding time of 1:04 and the 2-1 decision to put Oklahoma on the board, 10-3.

The Cowboy’s Jordan Oliver earned a pin over OU’s Jordan Keller at 133 pounds, putting Oklahoma State out 16-3 in the dual.

Zack Bailey earned the Sooners second win of the night after defeating OSU’s Luke Silver, 8-5, at 141 pounds. Bailey led 2-1 after earning a takedown and giving up an escape in the first period. Bailey started the second period off with an early escape and ended it with a takedown, but gave up a reversal with just seconds remaining. Bailey secured the victory with a takedown in the third and 2:20 of riding time. After the victory the Sooners trailed 16-6.

At 149 pounds Oklahoma’s Nick Lester dropped a 5-2 decision to the Cowboys’ No. 9-ranked Jamal Parks. The Sooners trailed 19-6 heading into the 157-pound bout.

OU’s Matt Lester brought the score to 19-9 after he upset OSU’s Albert White. Lester scored the bouts only points after posting an escape in the second period to give the Sooner the 1-0 win.

The 165-pound bout between saw Oklahoma’s Chase Nelson pitted against the Cowboys’ Dallas Bailey. Bailey scored first with a reversal in the second period. Nelson answered with an escape to put the score at 2-1 going into the third. In the third, Nelson came close to scoring a takedown, but did not get the call from the official and dropped a 2-1 decision, giving the Cowboys a 22-9 advantage.

In the duals final match, OU’s Tyler Caldwell, ranked No. 5, scored an escape and a takedown to earn the 3-0 decision over OSU’s 13th-ranked Mike Benefiel, ending the Bedlam showdown with a final score of 22-12.

The Sooners break for finals before gearing up for the Midlands Invitational on Dec. 29-30 in Chicago, Ill.
